On the southern border of the appellation of origin, on the course of the Iregua River and in the foothills of Islallana is this wise vineyard of 0.68 ha planted in 1930, known by the local elders as “Caracuesta”<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The old “Garnachos”<\/strong> with their whimsical shapes and other native grape varieties, to a lesser extent, reflect the tradition and know-how of this vineyard under the care of Dionisio, a local winegrower who has been working this “Eden”<\/strong> for more than 70 years.<\/p>\n

As the local elders remember, the best vineyards of Islallana were located in the Sorzano area, where the most prized and valued grapes slept in the Tierroya area.<\/p>\n

A blend of Garnacha grapes with a small portion of Viura grapes from a 70 year old vineyard in the Iregua Valley. Yields of approximately 2400 kg of grapes per hectare.<\/p>\n

La Rad is located in one of the foothills of the western bank of the Iregua River, at an altitude of 670 meters, between the municipalities of Albelda de Iregua and Entrena, and with a marked Mediterranean character. It is a small vineyard over 60 years old, with clay soils and the presence of boulders in a goblet-trained vineyard (with a distance of 1.30 m x 1.30 m between vines).<\/p>\n

Despite the virtues of this terroir, the industrial trend in Rioja viticulture did not exclude this jewel from being uprooted because of its low economic yield and low productive profitability. We were able to save this “vineyard on the verge of extinction” by working closely with the winegrower and by valuing the effort and virtues of this vineyard.<\/p>\n

This wine rediscovers the strength of Rioja’s white varieties through oxidative aging.<\/p>\n

Around 20% of botrytized grapes and 80% of overripe white grapes were harvested.<\/p>\n

Subsequently, the grapes are subjected to a 24hr skin maceration.<\/p>\n

Vinified separately by varietal, it was then aged in French oak barrels.<\/p>\n

During the course of the aging process, some of the barrels were not refilled in time, which resulted in the evaporation of wine during aging (known as the “elixir of the gods”), causing oxygen to enter the barrels and initiating the evolution of the wine.

After 4 years of aging in the same barrels, the wine was transferred to stainless steel, where it was stabilized and bottled to create a unique wine in a Rioja winery.<\/p>\n
